It's World Mental Health Day on Monday 10 October.
There’s lots of uncertainty at the moment, especially around events such as the war in Ukraine, recent changes in Government, and the cost-of-living crisis. It’s a lot to take in and it can feel worrying.
It seems fitting that this year, the theme for World Mental Health Day is: ‘make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority’.
This year, we’re observing World Mental Health Day by hanging knitted squares in our local communities (you might be reading this because you’ve found one of them!). Justine Harrison, Clinical Team Lead at Jubilee Mews, came up with this fantastic idea and with the help of her team, local knitting groups such as Helping Hands, and the people we support, she has gathered 500 knitted squares!
The squares are being strung together and tagged with a QR code to some top wellbeing tips, then hung in in our local communities – all to lift people’s spirits and encourage them to take good care of their mental health!
We hope that these colourful squares encourage people in our communities to prioritise their mental health.
Prioritising your mental health: top tips
There are lots of things we can do to take good care of our mental health, these include:
- Eating a balanced diet and getting plenty of sleep.
- Exercising regularly, this could be a yoga class or even going for a walk in the fresh air.
- Catching up with a friend over a cup of tea.
- Getting involved in a new local interest group or activity.
- Talking to someone you trust, like your friends, family or GP so they can best support you.

We offer free mental health support to adults in the North East.
Our Northumberland Recovery College and South Tyneside’s Kind Mind Community run free workshops, courses, and activities for adults living or working in Northumberland or South Tyneside, who are looking to improve their wellbeing and meet new people.
Activities and courses take place both online and in local community venues.
