MHC was created in 1986 in response to the forthcoming ‘NHS and Community Care Act' legislation and the impending local retraction of large institutional provision of mental health care Silverdale Nursing Home opened as a pilot scheme for elderly care in 1986, located within the grounds of St. Nicholas' Hospital
First MHC Adult Scheme, Jubilee Mews , opened in 1991 , providing 12 places in 3 newly built 4 bed-roomed houses in Gosforth
MHC Gateshead services began in 1992 with the opening of Kirkwood (later to become Pinetree Lodge in our Older Persons Directorate)
The MHC Supported Housing service commenced in 1997 as one terraced house in Gosforth
Our Supportive Rehabilitation service, for people with complex and enduring mental health problems, was expanded in 1998 in response to the closure of Castle Hill House (previously managed by Gateshead Trust)
Respite services for people with dementia and related problems commenced within our Older Persons Directorate in 2000
Newcastle Clubhouse opened in the West End of Newcastle in 2002 .

In 2002 Mental Health Concern moved from ‘leasing' nursing staff and support workers from Gateshead Health and Newcastle , North Tyneside and Northumberland Mental Health Trusts to become a direct employer of all staff providing MHC services
In 2004 MHC took over the management of a city centre drop-in the Tom Carpenter Centre. The drop in is open 7 days a week and offers a variety of social & recreational activities.
In 2005 MHC became the host organisation for Launchpad, Newcastle's user development service. Ran by and for mental health service users.
